Course Description

General English

General English is one of the important courses offered by Alrifai Business School. The importance of this program stems from the fact that learning English has become one of the perquisite skills for the 21st century. This program leads learners, through an interesting journey of learning English from basic levels to proficiency through a series of well-organized steps carried out by highly qualified teachers and supported by authentic materials developed according to international standards. This program, as whole, focuses the four skills, i.e. listening, speaking, reading and writing. Furthermore, learners will be involved in many interactive activities to build their vocabulary and improve their pronunciation and grammar. Also, this program adopts a dynamic approach to language learning and teaching in the sense that our competent teachers shall constantly tailor their teaching strategies and adapt the teaching material to meet the diverse needs of all learners. In a nutshell, in addition to preparing learners for the future, this program is presented in a positive, encouraging and motivating learning environment which assists students become autonomous, confident and optimistic learners.

Our approach to learning and teaching throughout the whole program is based on the following research-informed principles

  1. Language learning needs time. In other words, no one can learn a language overnight.
  2. Language learning requires a lot of practice; practice makes perfect.
  3. Learners are different; they are different in their learning styles, IQ, motivation, social background and economic status.
  4. The language teacher can play a significant role throughout the learning process. He/she can establish a close rapport with the students and create a positive atmosphere in the classroom which makes language learning interesting and enjoyable.
  5. Interactivity in the classroom is extremely important; therefore, it is important to engage students in interactive tasks.
  6. Cooperation should be encouraged among students; through cooperation students learn from each other and acquire the skills needed to participate effectively in teamwork.
  7. Feedback should be given to students in a friendly and a non-threating manner.
  8. The learner is the centre of the whole learning process; therefore, language learning should become leaner-centred rather than teacher-centred.
  9. Language and culture are inseparable; therefore, learners should be exposed to the target culture.

The General English course offered by Alrifai Business School consists of twelve levels; each level comprises 6 units with the exception of the first two levels – beginner 1 & beginner 2- which comprise 7 units each. Every level shall be completed in 5 weeks (40 hours).  In addition to the concise description mentioned below, learners shall watch 2 videos in each unit; the first one introduces the unit and the second one addresses an issue related to the unit’s surject. Furthermore, learners shall listen throughout the whole course to a great number of high-quality listening excerpts which will make the journey of leaning English engaging, enjoyable and fruitful.

Evaluation and assessment throughout the whole program shall be carried out as shown in the table below:

To join the course , you need to do the following:

  1. Please complete contact information form.
  2. Within 3 days you will receive an email to take the placement test.
  3. After taking the placement test, you be registered in one of the levels mentioned above.
  4. Fees: ($ 150 )
  5. You registration will only be confirmed after you pay the fees.
  6. Fees paid shall not be refundable.

 

NB

  • At the end of each level, certificates will be awarded to all students who completed the course successfully.
  • To complete each level successfully and move to the next level, every student must score not less than 70 out of 100 marks, i. e., the passing mark is 70 out of 100

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To say the alphabet, spell words, and introduce yourself in English.
  • To ask and answer the following questions: What’s this ………..? How are you? Where are from?
  • To say and write numbers, talk about other people, use social expressions, and talk about your family and your friends
  • To learn what to say over phone, talk about things you like such as sports, food, and drinks.
  • To lean names of languages and nationalities, ask about prices, talk about the time and what you do every day.
  • To learn some words that go to gather, complete a questionnaire, and describe your favourite things.
  • To write a short email, use personal pronouns with verb to be, and understand the basic forms and meanings of plurals and adjectives

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To describe a home or a place using there is & there are….and to use accurately certain prepositions like in, on, under, and next to
  • To ask about directions and to use question words and pronouns in speaking and writing. Additionally, you will be able to use the following words correctly: this, that, when, and where
  • To form negative questions, talk about dates, and talk about activities using the simple present and the simple past.
  • To ask and answer questions like what did you do? to use the words: Oh, good, and Really, and talk about your last holiday and what did you do?
  • To use “some” and “any” correctly, use verb to be in the past tense, and understand the differences between regular and irregular verbs.
  • To form past simple questions and negatives, write sentences in the past simple positive, and use past simple expressions.
  • To talk or write about things you “can” and “can’t” do, talk about everyday problems, and read about what people eat in different parts of the world.
  • To learn how to use requests and offers, adjectives and nouns that go together, and adverbs
  • To learn the meanings of signs and how to use the following words correctly: I’d like, I’d like to, some, any, would you like, and would you like to
  • To describe what you are wearing and to use the present continuous and present simple correctly
  • To talk and describe future plans using future forms

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To introduce yourself, ask, and answer personal questions, and talk about yourself and your family by using verbs like “have”, “go”, “live” and “like”.
  • To learn certain expressions used in everyday conversations, talk about people’s jobs and families using the present simple.
  • To talk or describe what you like to do in your free time using the present simple and learn how to tell the time in different ways.
  • To complete a short and simple questionnaire and an application form.
  • To describe your house using “there is” and “there are”. Also, you will learn where things are using the prepositions of place correctly.
  • To say and write umbers up to one million, fractions, and decimals.
  • To learn about words that go together and compound nouns.
  • To use correctly the past simple with regular and irregular verbs and to learn how to describe feelings
  • To distinguish between adjectives ending in –ed and adjectives ending in –ing.
  • To learn and practice using ordinal numbers

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To talk and write about past events in history with special emphasis on your own past memories
  • To learn about adverbs and how they are used in telling stories
  • To use special expressions for special occasions and to describe food or drink that you love or hate using countable and uncountable nouns.
  • To talk about food and drinks by using the following words correctly: some, any, much or many.
  • To describe cities and compare them with each other and ask about and tell directions using the right prepositions
  • To talk about activities that ae happening now using the present continuous and to know the difference between the present simple and the present continuous.
  • To describe people, to use “going to” to talk about your future plans, and learn how to use infinitives to say why you are doing certain things.
  • To learn how to make and respond to suggestions.
  • To learn the usage and form of the present perfect tense
  • To learn certain words that go with “take” and “get”, words and phrases used in travelling, and practice conversations related to transport and travel

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To review the present, past and future tenses.
  • To Learn about words with similar meanings, words that have two meanings, and certain expressions you use when shopping or meeting someone for the first time.
  • To practice talking about people you know using present tenses and to describe free time activities.
  • To use the past simple and past continuous in telling stories and to practice using regular and irregular adverbs.
  • To learn words describing quantities and containers and to how to use: how much, how many, a lot, a little.
  • To practice using verbs followed by –ing like “love travelling” and verbs followed by to-infinitive like “want to travel”.
  • To express future time using different ways: going to, will, present continuous, and learn to express doubt and certainty.
  • To learn how to use the present perfect with words like ever, never, always. In addition, you will understand and explain the differences in meaning and form between the present perfect and past simple and when to use the words “for” and “since”.
  • To learn how to use question tags

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To describe people, palaces or things using comparative and superlative adjectives.
  • To learn the question structure: What ………. like? and to listen to listen to people talking about free things in life.
  • To learn synonyms and antonyms as a technique to expand your vocabulary.
  • To make and respond to suggestions, talk about obligations using “have to” and describe dangerous jobs.
  • To talk about parts of the body and things to wear.
  • To learn expressions used when you go to a doctor and common illnesses.
  • To learn how to use past perfect, past simple, and past continuous.
  • To practice using joining words like so, because, when, as soon as, and learn how to describe your feelings; positive and negative.
  • To practice using exclamations with “so” and “such”.
  • To use passive tense and to learn some words that go together.
  • To talk about some of the most common habits in the world and to practice using expressions used in phone calls.
  • To practice using the present perfect continuous, present perfect simple, and present perfect continuous.
  • To learn vocabulary used in talking about big events and how to respond to good and bad news.
  • Learn how to talk about future plans using conditional sentences.
  • To talk or describe imaginary situations.

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To ask questions for the purpose of obtaining information about people, places, and things.
  • To learn how to form compound adjectives, and to explain the difference between adjectives ending in –ed and adjectives ending in –ing.
  • To learn how to describe a certain person and how to say goodbye in a number of different situations.
  • To review tenses with special emphasis on auxiliary verbs.
  • To know how to use certain strategies to deal with unknown words.
  • To learn how to use simple and continuous tenses to describe facts, routines, and current activities
  • To practice using active and passive forms.
  • To learn to use formal language when you apply for a job.
  • To practice using the narrative tenses and the structures used in telling stories
  • To learn how to use the past continuous, the past perfect, and how to describe your favourite stories
  • To practice writing stories using a variety of linking words such as however, as soon as, during, while, when, who, but and so
  • To practice suing modal verbs and other verbs used in giving advice, obligation and permission.
  • To learn the literal and idiomatic meanings of phrasal verbs.
  • To learn how to make polite requests in different situations and how to use the present perfect to talk about experiences.
  • To learn how to form adverbs in English and to practice using numbers in a variety of contexts.

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To practice using verb patterns: verb + to, verb + -ing and describe and discuss certain topics like friendship.
  • To learn certain idioms and verbs used with parts of the body
  • To practice using different ways to express the future in English and how to use modal verbs and make predictions about the future.
  • To learn how to accept or deny an invitation politely.
  • To learn the functions of second and third conditional forms and how to use them to talk about hypothetical and unreal situations in the past.
  • To learn certain words with similar meanings but used in different ways
  • To learn phrases to deal with money in banks, shops, and restaurant and how to use certain words and expressions to share your thoughts and feelings
  • To learn: nouns phrases, articles, possessives, pronouns, compound nouns.
  • To practice using informal expressions commonly used across social media

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To study the following concepts: the tense system, informal language, compound words, casual conversations, and informal writing.
  • To practice using the present perfect; simple and continuous.
  • To use “make and do” accurately and to practice talking about places.
  • To practice writing formal emails and talking about books and films using narrative tenses.
  • To learn how to show interest, surprise, and politeness through the use of certain expressions.
  • To learn how to link ideas and use future forms.
  • To learn the usage of common verbs like “take and put” and learn how to apply for a job.
  • To learn how to use expressions of quantity, business expressions and umbers.
  • To understand the structure of advertisements and to practice report writing

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To study modal verbs and related verbs and to learn how to express exaggeration and understatement.
  • To practice using phrasal verbs with “get”, relative clauses, present and past participles.
  • To learn adverb collocations, exclamations, temperature and describing places
  • To talk about habits and how to make a complaint in a variety of situations.
  • To lean and know the differences between homonyms and homophones.
  • To learn how to write for a for a talk.
  • To study metaphors and idioms related to body parts
  • To learn how to add emphasis to what you say or write.
  • To learn how to talk and write about hypothetical situations and how to express wishes and regrets.
  • To learn how to link ideas, use articles and determiners, and improve style and cohesion in writing.

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To review previously learned tenses
  • To practice using synonyms and antonyms and expressions related to intelligence.
  • To talk and write about personal life and use reflexive pronouns in a correct way.
  • To learn how adverbs and adjectives are formed and used.
  • To write a simple story and to study certain tips related to the proper usage of English.
  • To practice writing paragraphs and short essays using graphs.
  • To practice using phrasal verbs with “up” and “down”.
  • To talk about spending and income and to practice using modal auxiliaries, present, future, and past
  • To understand and use adjectives and noun collocations.
  • To write a formal email and learn how to avoid repetition.
  • To study certain cultural differences and learn how to describe similarities and differences
  • To practice using a number of ways for adding emphasis and learning how to form nouns from phrasal verbs.

At this level you are expected to learn the following:

  • To study real and unreal tense usage and to practice using phrasal verbs with “in” and “off”
  • To learn how to write an informal letter and use “relatives” and “participles”.
  • To learn and practice using homonyms, homophones, and homographs
  • To practice expressing opinions in speaking and writing.
  • To learn how to use discourse markers with special emphasis on style and cohesion.
  • To learn how to express informal opinions and report the news.
  • To learn how to debate a certain issue and participate in public debates.
  • To practise future tenses, synonyms and antonyms, linking devices, and metaphors,
  • To practice writing biographies with special attention to style and cohesion.
